Kelly joins us as an expert on hormonal balance. After working for years in corporate America, she went off on her own and started her own business in 2011. FitFluential was the first ever fitness influencer network of its kind, and since then Kelly has started three health and fitness companies.
In 2007, Kelly went through a divorce and perimenopause at the same time. Noticing dramatic changes in her body and health at the time, it seemed like everything was falling apart. Her initial symptoms were an increase in body temperature and sweating, challenges losing weight, weight gain, and difficulty sleeping. Fast forward to today, she’s 50, feels and looks better than at 30 years old, and is able to stay in shape easier than ever.

Skin problems (acne, keratosis pilaris), weight gain in places you’ve never had it before, headaches, increase in temperature or sweating, and hot flashes are all common in those going through perimenopause, menopause, or post-menopause.
This is something you should not have to live with! By working with a functional medicine doctor or one that specifically deals with hormonal imbalance, you can begin to feel like yourself again. You don’t want a doctor only putting you on progesterone, because that’s not enough. Hormones are very complicated, like a puzzle, and they respond differently for everyone. This is the importance of blood work and getting a specific plan for you.
The number one recommendation (for men and women) is to get yourself to a doctor that will run comprehensive blood work on you. A simple “panel” is not enough - it should be testing hundreds of things. Use an integrative medicine doctor and someone who specifically works with bioidentical hormone treatments.
Also, ask yourself a few things about the medications you’re taking. Are you on hormonal birth control? This is something that will greatly affect your body, and it’s worth reconsidering when appropriate. For example, if Kelly would have known what birth control could do to her body, she says she would have never taken it.
If you’re on a lot of over-the-counter medications, anti-anxiety medications, antibiotics, acne medications, or birth control, these are all medications that can mess with your hormonal balance and affect you moving forward. If you decide to wean off of medications, do this with your doctor’s guidance.
Lastly, pay attention to what you’re eating. You may have a build up of years and years of horrible eating (fake foods, diet soda, the low-fat craze, and processed foods in general), and this will play a role in your hormonal balance moving forward. Start replacing the processed junk and fake foods with real food - fruits, vegetables, and healthy proteins and fats. Sometimes, it’s a food sensitivity that’s in the way of you living your best life. If that’s the case, discovering and eliminating those sensitivities may be your ticket back to health.
For Kelly, taking supplements is just a way of life, and it’s the way for her to feel better and balance her hormones.
