5 Eyelid Scrubs to Try for Crusty Eyes, Eyelids, and Eyelashes

Blepharitis Treatment

Crusty eyelids, or "eye boogers," can be a real nuisance for you, especially in the morning.  This is usually caused by an overgrowth of bacteria on the eyelids.

Using a commercially available eyelid cleanser, like the five I listed below, should help support your eyelids in times like this.

Here, I put together the five eyelid hygiene products to try for your crusty eyes, eyelids and eyelashes.

5 Eyelid Cleansers for Crusty Eyes

1. Heyedrate Lid & Lash Cleanser

Heyedrate Lid & Lash Cleanser is one of the first over-the-counter hypochlorous acid sprays.  This natural, non-detergent based spray is perfect for deep cleaning the skin, and it's simple to use. Simply spray the solution onto a cotton ball or round and apply it to the base of the eyelashes.  This is my "go-to" product as it is very gentle and I have had great success with it.

Heyedrate Lid & Lash Cleanser's 3 Ingredients: Pure Hypochlorous Acid, 0.015%, electrolyzed water (H2O), Sodium Chloride (NaCl)

Tested safe for contact with skin, eyes, and ingestion

Shelf Life: 2 year shelf life after date of manufacture

2. Avenova

Avenova is the first FDA-approved, non-detergent based, non-antibiotic product for eyelid cleansing.   This is a great product to use, and I have seen great results.  Once Heyedrate Lid & Lash Cleanser was released, I switched all my patients over without any issues.

Avenova's 2 Ingredients: Neutrox (pure hypochlorous acid, 0.01% as a preservative) in saline

Safe for contact with skin, eyes, and ingestion

Shelf Life: 30 day shelf life after opening

3. Cliradex

Cliradex is a great preservative-free lid wipe that contains 4-Terpineol (T40), which is an active ingredient used for demodex mites (YES, mites in your eyelashes).  This was mostly reserved for those with Demodex, but I now use a tea tree soap.

Cliradex's 7 Ingredients: Water, 4-Terpineol, Glycerin, Polysorbate 20, Polysorbate 80, Carbomer, Triethannolamine

4. Ocusoft Lid Scrubs

Ocusoft Lid Scrubs are a detergent based cleanser that has been used for many years. I used this before Avenova came to the market, from 2010 until 2012. With the newer products on the market, like Avenova and Heyedrate Lid & Lash Cleanser, we find ourselves reaching for this less often.

Ocusoft Lid Scrub's 13 Ingredients: Cocoamphodiacetate Disodium, D-Panthenol, Decyl Polygluoside, Methyl Gluceth-20, Modified Ringer’s Solution (purified water, sodium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride), PEG-120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate, POE-80 Sorbitan Monolaurate, Polyaminopropyl Biguanide, 1,2-Hexanediol, 1,2-Octanediol
