5 Best Eye Makeup Removers for Dry, Sensitive Skin

Removing your makeup at night is one of the most important things you can do for your eyes. Thoroughly removing makeup means that you’re not only giving your skin and eyes a chance to breathe, but you’re also eliminating debris that could accumulate and cause issues with dryness and eyelid bumps. We all know how unsightly a painful eyelid bump can be, so do your part each night to support the health of your eyelids! That being said, it’s also important to have a daily eyelid hygiene regimen that you can stick to.

Dr. Jenna's Eyelid Hygiene Care Regimen

1. Use a safe makeup

Before we even get into a cleansing routine, I need to mention how important it is to choose better makeup. If you suffer from dryness, you need to be paying attention to what you’re putting on your face and especially around your eyes.

If you’re looking for a safer eye makeup alternative, check out Eyes Are The Story. This brand offers both liquid eyeliner and mascara for those who wish to avoid many of the heavy chemicals regular eye makeup is laden with. Their makeup is manufactured without the use of fragrances, phthalates, and parabens, and the mascara even comes in small one-month supply tubes. This is a great feature of this line because, although changing out your mascara every three months is recommended, changing it out every month is optimal for sensitive eyes.

2. Remove eye makeup with either an eyelid wipe or an eye makeup remover oil

Once you’ve found better makeup that you love, make sure you’re removing it completely at night. Sleeping in makeup is a surefire way to end up with red, inflamed eyes and eyelids. If you prefer to use wipes, the Mediviz Eyelid Wipes are great for removing makeup (even waterproof!).

We usually recommend using the Heyedrate Eye Makeup Remover Oil for those who wish to avoid all harsh ingredients, and it works great for removing makeup. One tip I’ve learned is that if you’re wearing waterproof makeup, simply wet your eyelids and lashes before using this product and it will come right off!

3. Wash face with a safe face wash

There are so many horrible options for face wash on the market today, so your next step is to switch to one that’s friendlier for your eyes and skin. We’ve seen the Heyedrate Foaming Face Wash support the skin in a healthy way. This wash contains 100% plant-based ingredients including 19 botanicals and extracts.

If you’re more into bar soap, or you want something you can use on your entire body as well, check out the Heyedrate Tea Tree Bar Soap. With just five ingredients, this bar soap is meant to be gentle but medicinal.  We love leaving this bar in the shower and using it for our hair, face, and body.

4. Spray Heyedrate Lid and Lash Cleanser on eyelids

Arguably the most important step in this routine is using hypochlorous acid to clean your eyelids after you’ve washed your face. Using a hypochlorous acid spray such as Heyedrate Lid and Lash Cleanser can go a long way in supporting the health of your eyes and eyelids.

After washing your face, simply spray the solution onto a cotton ball or round and apply to your closed eyelids and eyelashes. Then, let it dry. There’s no need to rinse the product off.

5. Moisturize your eyelids

After the hypochlorous acid has dried, it’s important to moisturize your skin (and that includes the skin of your eyelids!) So many people suffer from dry eyelid skin, and some of this is due to lack of moisture. We recommend using a moisturizer free of harsh chemicals or simply using organic, cold-pressed jojoba oil.

MediViz Eyelid Wipes

1. MediViz Tea Tree Eyelid Wipes

Many people love using a wipe to remove their makeup, and they’re a great option because they incorporate a little friction into the removal process. This helps to remove stubborn mascara and eyeliner in between the eyelashes.

We love recommending the MediViz Eyelid Tea Tree Wipes because they are specifically formulated for the eyes, they’re gentle, and they’re effective.

2. Heyedrate Eye Makeup Remover Oil

To avoid any and all chemicals in your eye makeup remover, stick with oil-based removers.

We love the Heyedrate Eye Makeup Remover Oil because not only is it effective, but it’s also formulated with only a few simple ingredients. Organic grapeseed oil, organic jojoba oil, vitamin E, and organic tea tree oil make up this simple formula, and it’s one that I use nightly.

3. Garnier SkinActive Micellar Cleansing Water

Micellar cleansing water is an interesting addition to the eye makeup removal scene, and it works quite well. With few ingredients, this formula will remove all of your makeup without a problem and leave you feeling clean and refreshed.

4. Almay Oil Free Gentle Eye Makeup Remover

The most gentle of Almay’s eye makeup removers, this one is made for sensitive skin. This oil-free remover is formulated with aloe, cucumber, and green tea to help soothe your eyes while removing all stubborn makeup. Almay claims this product is cruelty free, free of fragrances, and safe for all skin types.

5. MediViz Eyelid Wipes

Last on our list are the MediViz Regular Wipes for those who don't like tea tree essential oil. If you want a powerhouse eyelid wipe without any tea tree, this is it!
