Back to the Basics of Dry Eye with Natural Cures with Dr. Travis Zigler

Sometimes we just need to go back to the basics. A lot of people want to jump straight to step 3 in curing their dry eye symptoms. First, we need to be sure we look at Steps 1 & 2. We talk a lot about these steps in our Dry Eye Syndrome Support Community on Facebook. These steps include a warm compress, omega-3s, your health/diet, and no smoking.

Good morning Dry Eye Community! This is Dr. Travis Zigler and I've been reading a lot over the last 2 weeks. We’ve been on a little vacation so haven’t been able to respond fully to the most of you. I've been reading a lot of information on the Dry Eye Community and I see a lot of people getting stuck in the weeds, we'll call it, and I wanna entitle this Facebook Live “Going back to the Basics” because a lot of people forget that. They just wanna jump right to step 3, right away, in their dry eye treatment. When really they should be thinking about steps 1 and 2 first and step 1 treatment that I always do, we always talk about it, warm compresses, omega 3s, healthy diet, not smoking, and exercise. Your dry eye is a symptom of your body not producing well and not being healthy. And so, getting back to the basics of health will solve your dry eye. Eating a green leafy vegetable diet and lots of colors in your diet, lots of colorful peppers, lots of colorful vegetables, things like that, but also, kale, spinach, green leafy green, broccoli those will all help keep your body at a more basic state compare to acidic state. An acidic state comes from the western diet of McDonalds, Burger King, and all the fast food, eating a lot of meat, and omega-6s. Going back to the leafy green and basic state, then that’s gonna help fight cancer. It’s gonna help you fight your dry eye. Its gonna make you healthier. It’s gonna help you loose weight. It’s gonna help you do a lot more. So going back to the basics, I wanted to just go over that for a couple of minutes and just think about leafy green vegetables, colorful vegetables, no meat. You can eat some meat but limiting your meat intake because that will make you more acidic versus vegetables to make your body more basic. Sticking to water to drink. Staying away from things like milk, pop, soda, whatever you wanna call it, other things like that. If you have any questions about any of this let me know below. But again, getting your health correct first, is gonna solve your dry eye. Almost all my dry eye patients are unhealthy in some way. So, going back to the basics of health, exercise, and diet. Why do you recommend staying away from milk? I’m a 72-year-old woman with osteopenia, trying not to end up with osteoporosis, so I endeavor to get enough calcium in my diet every day by eating organic non-fat plain Greek yogurt with fruit and walnuts for breakfast and drinking a class of non-fat Lactaid milk with my lunch. How would I get enough calcium in my diet without milk and yogurt?
