Foundation Fighting Blindness
At Eye Love, we really enjoy highlighting the great work other companies are doing in this world. We can all agree that if we all gave a little more of our time, money, and resources, the world would be a better place! This month, we're featuring Foundation Fighting Blindness!
What they do
In 1971, little was known about the blinding retinal degenerative diseases and very little research was being done. This drove a passionate group of families to establish Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB) to find treatments and cures for inherited retinal diseases that were affecting their loved ones.
Today, the foundation is the world’s leading private funder of retinal disease research. On an annual basis, Foundation Fighting Blindness and the Foundation’s Clinical Research Institute fund more than 100 research projects conducted by more than 150 research investigators at institutes, eye hospitals, and universities in the United States, Australia, England, France, Germany, The Netherlands, Italy, Israel, and Mexico.
That funding has been a driving force behind the progress toward cures, identification of more than 250 genes linked to retinal disease, and the launch of 20 clinical trials for potential treatments.
Their mission is to drive the research that would lead to preventions, treatments, and vision restoration for the degenerative retinal diseases such as macular degeneration, retinitis pigmentosa, Stargardt disease, and Usher syndrome that affect millions of people around the world.
How they started
In 1971, Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB) was established as the Retinitis Pigmentosa Foundation (RP Foundation) under the leadership of Gordon and Llura Gund and Ben and Beverly Berman with the assistance of a passionate group of families all driven to find treatment for inherited retinal diseases that were affecting their loved ones.
In 1974, the Foundation established the first multi-disciplinary retinal disease research laboratory-the Berman-Gund Laboratory- at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary.
The RP Foundation became the Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB) in 1995.
