What Is The Best Way To Clean Eyelids?

What Is The Best Way To Clean Eyelids? 2

Eyelid Hygiene

What is the best non-irritating eyelid cleanser for blepharitis and dry eye?

We are biased here, but our Heyedrate Lid and Lash Cleanser and Avenova are the two best. Avenova is not our company, but Heyedrate Lid and Lash Cleanser is. Very similar products.

They both have Hypochlorous acid in them. Ours has electrolyzed water and then table salt in it and it has a two year shelf life. We prescribe it for patients 2x a day, making it very easy to use.

I spray it directly on my eyelids right when I wake up. Then after I’m done washing my face, I spray it on and you just leave it on.

My wife on the other hand, sprays it on a cotton ball or a cotton round and then wipes her eyelids about 5 or 6 times and that replaces her eyelid scrubs. Then she just leaves it on.

Does it hurt to use the eyelid spray more than 2x a day?

No, it does not at all. It is very natural, organic, vegan spray that is good for your skin. You can actually use it for wound care if you get a cut. It’s a good antibacterial and that’s why we use it for lid scrubs and blepharitis.

Eyelid Scrubs and Lid Hygiene for Blepharitis and Demodex

What is the purpose of eyelid scrubs?

Eyelid scrubs are for blepharitis, which is when your eyelids have an overgrowth of bacteria. Usually Staphylococcus aureus, this normal bacteria lives on your eyelids and can become overgrown. If this bacteria becomes overgrown, it will actually create too much toxic waste for your eyelids to handle. This causes a lot of irritation on your eyelids, which is when your eyelids become red and inflamed and that’s when it goes up into your eye itself.

If blepharitis gets bad enough, we’ll actually see a lot of inflammation on the surface of the eye on the cornea and on the conjunctiva. Eyelid scrubs keep your eyelids clean, and we always promote treating the eyelids first and then the dry eye second because usually if you heal the eyelids it’s going to help with your dry eye. Mainly, the purpose of a lid scrub is to reduce that bacterial load safely.

We promote our Heyedrate Lid and Lash Spray because it has three ingredients:

  • Hypochlorous acid
  • Electrolyzed water
  • Table salt (Sodium Chloride - NaCI)

The reason we don’t promote the other guys, the ones that come in the package that you can scrub on, is because they have 13 ingredients that are detergents and a lot of unpronounceable ingredients. So again, we’re very natural holistic doctors; we like simplicity. Keep it simple!

Demodex: What You Need to Know About Eyelash Mites

Have you ever heard of demodex? If not, you’re in for a surprise. Nearly every single person has small mites living in the skin of their eyelids. Unfortunately, the infestation of these mites can cause inflammation and can wreak havoc on your eyes.

When demodex parasites nest in the eyelash follicles of your eyelids, they initiate an inflammatory response that leads to plugged meibomian glands and meibomian gland dysfunction, or MGD. MGD is also closely associated with blepharitis, which occurs when bacteria builds up around the eyelashes. Blepharitis is an extremely common condition that affects 30 million Americans!

With both MGD and Blepharitis, you would notice red, painful, irritated eyes and may often notice crustiness around the eyelashes and on the eyelids. These symptoms, along with burning of the eyes and blurred vision, mean dry eye syndrome. MGD and blepharitis cause Evaporative Dry Eye, because the glands are not able to produce the proper oils needed to prevent evaporation of the tear film.

So what can you do about this? While there are many products that claim to decrease blepharitis and MGD, Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl) actually works to kill all of the bacteria that demodex feed on. HOCl is naturally made in our own bodies, so is as natural and organic as it comes. Studies show that HOCl properly kills the bacteria responsible for Evaporative Dry Eye, and gets rid of the demodex mites without causing irritation.

You owe it to yourself (and your red, irritated eyes!) to kill those mites and get back to comfort. Our new Heyedrate Lid and Lash Spray is great for cleaning the skin and is absolutely worth a try.

Dr. Travis Zigler Discusses Signs and Symptoms of Blepharitis

Hey! Dr. Travis Zigler here with Eye Love. I wanted to go over some signs and symptoms of blepharitis today. Had a question in the group about it so pretty easy to go over this with you. Blepharitis is simply just an inflammation of the eyelids of the blephra. So, what we’re doing is just trying to heal that by using different things like sprays and omega-3 supplements and other things that are directly going to help with that. So, some signs and symptoms. Signs that we will see and maybe that you’ll see too is the little scurf or dandruff on the eyelashes, that showing there’s a little too much bacteria that are on the eyelid and that’s going to create the kind of scurf looking appearance. You’re also going to notice some vessels, fancy word for just some new vessel growth. When you close your eyelids you’ll see little blood vessels growing in there. This spray will help get rid of those and it will help get the scurf or the dandruff down as well. That’s kind of more anterior signs. Some posterior signs if you lift up your eyelid, you’ll see little kind of pimple dots there. That’s the meibomian glands or the oil glands of the eyelid just clogged. Styes, that’s another big one. So, styes are what we call hordeolums. You can have external and internal hordeolums. This helps with that quite a bit and so we’ve had patients that had styes their whole life. We put them on the regimen of this twice a day and pretty much the styes discontinue and no longer come back. This is really big for that. Itchy and inflamed eyelid is another big one. Red, dry eyes, is another big one too. Signs and symptoms of blepharitis- if you have any question just let me know. I'll go over how to use this real quick. So, pretty easy, all you do is, this is what I do, I wash my face like I normally do, wash the eyelids and then I just spray directly on the skin, rub it in, up and down, side to side, and then I just let it sit and I let dry. It can stay on the surface of your skin. Now, what I find my female patients like to do, especially my wife. She’ll get a cotton ball or a cotton round. She’ll do about 3 sprays, wipe that eyelid, up and down, side to side, not too hard, after that she gets a new one and then she does 3 to 4 more sprays, make sure that cotton ball is nice and moist, then you just go side to side, up and down, make sure it’s nice and clean, and just let it sit. You don’t have to wash it off. Now, if you use lotions or anything, or oils after you do all this, make sure you wait till that dries. Thanks!

It can stay on the surface of your skin.

0:01:53.899,0:01:57.259
Now, what I find my female patients like to
do, especially my wife.

0:01:57.259,0:01:59.590
She’ll get a cotton ball or a cotton round.

0:01:59.590,0:02:07.189
She’ll do about 3 sprays, wipe that eyelid,
up and down, side to side, not too hard, after

0:02:07.189,0:02:12.440
that she gets a new one and then she does
3 to 4 more sprays, make sure that cotton

0:02:12.440,0:02:14.700
ball is nice and moist.

0:02:14.700,0:02:19.500
Then you just go side to side, up and down,
make sure it’s nice and clean, and just

0:02:19.500,0:02:20.500
let it sit.

0:02:20.500,0:02:21.680
You don’t have to wash it off.
