Can Allergies Cause Eye Problems?

Dry Eyes or Allergies?

Is the itchy feeling and redness due to dry eye or allergies?

Our dry eye community member says she has sudden dry eye with redness that flares ups every 3 to 5 days. It starts out itchy and it gets red and veiny, then redness subsides but the conjunctiva swells.

I actually feel that you might have an allergy to something. When your eyes are itchy a lot of the time, yes they can be dry, but itchiness is just a telltale sign of allergies. Also, the fact that your conjunctiva is swelling, we see that with allergies more than anything. I’m guessing that you have something around your house, a detergent that you are using, a soap that you are using, something is causing you to have an allergic reaction to it. I feel like that’s more of the issue than dry eyes. The number 1 treatment for that is just finding out what it is, and remove the problem. You may have to do a little digging but that’s what I would start with.
