Dr. Jenna Zigler Discusses Blepharitis and Dry Eye Treatment

Hey, this is Dr. Jenna Zigler here with Eye Love. We’ve had a couple questions about blepharitis and how it could contribute to dry eye. Also, if blepharitis is bacterial and what causes it. I’m going to go over a couple of things. there Basically, with blepharitis, it starts out with anterior blepharitis and that’s what we know as those "crusties" that you get along your eyelash margin, those "crusties" that your get that surround your eyelashes. That’s called scurf, and it’s just a funny term for those flakes that you get on your eyelashes. Mostly it is dead skin, bacteria, that type of thing. Definitely bacteria on your eyelids and around your eyes can contribute to anterior blepharitis because it’s going to cause that breakdown on skin. It’s going to cause that flakyness that you get. If anterior blepharitis is not treated, it can actually move backwards and behind your eyelashes are your meibomian glands. So, it’s going to affect those meibomian glands back there and that’s what we know as meibomian gland disease, or posterior blepharitis. It is basically where those glands are being affected. Those glands aren’t producing the oils as they should and you know the proper quantity, the proper quality of oils, to be able to keep your eyes moist, those tears on your eyes. When you have posterior blepharitis or meibomian gland disease, basically what that does is it breaks down that inner most layer of your tears, so, it breaks down that lipid layer and that's such an important layer. What it does is keeps your eyes really coated with moisture. It allows your watery tears to kind of stick to your eyes instead of running off your eyes. You know some people have trouble without having not enough tears and it can affect that as well. So, definitely blepharitis and dry eye are related. If you don’t start by controlling your anterior blepharitis it’s going to really cause problems with dry eyes in the future. We absolutely recommend cleaning your eyelids really well. Our new spray is really great for that. It really fights that bacteria, keeps all that blepharitis away, and keeps those dry eyes from happening. So, I hope that helps, if you have any questions just let us know. Thanks!

One Love,

Dr. Jenna Zigler

Hey, this is Dr. Jenna Zigler here with Eye
Love.

0:00:03.879,0:00:09.610
We’ve had a couple questions about blepharitis
and how it could contribute to dry eye, um,

0:00:09.610,0:00:14.560
and also about if blepharitis is bacterial
or not or kinda what causes it.

0:00:14.560,0:00:16.880
So, I’m going to go over a couple of things
there.

0:00:16.880,0:00:22.029
Um, basically with blepharitis, it starts
out with anterior blepharitis and that’s

0:00:22.029,0:00:28.460
what we know as those crusties that you get
along your eyelash margin, those crusties

0:00:28.460,0:00:31.009
that your get that surround your eyelashes.

0:00:31.009,0:00:36.540
That’s called scurf and it’s just a funny
term for those flakes that you get on your

0:00:36.540,0:00:37.540
eyelashes.

0:00:37.540,0:00:42.510
Um, mostly what it is dead skin, bacteria,
that type of thing.

0:00:42.510,0:00:49.300
Um, so definitely bacteria on your eyelids
and around your eyes can contribute to anterior

0:00:49.300,0:00:52.510
blepharitis because it’s going to cause
that breakdown on skin.

0:00:52.510,0:00:55.430
It’s going to cause that flakyness that
you get.

0:00:55.430,0:01:02.340
Um, if anterior blepharitis is not treated,
it can actually move backwards and behind

0:01:02.340,0:01:05.120
your eyelashes are your meibomian glands.

0:01:05.120,0:01:09.729
So, it’s going to affect those meibomian
glands back there and that’s what we know

0:01:09.729,0:01:16.420
as meibomian gland disease or posterior blepharitis,
um, is basically where those glands are being

0:01:16.420,0:01:17.420
affected.

0:01:17.420,0:01:23.060
So, those glands aren’t producing the oils
as they should and you know the proper quantity,

0:01:23.060,0:01:29.210
the proper quality of oils, um, to be able
to keep your eyes moist, those tears on your

0:01:29.210,0:01:30.210
eyes.

0:01:30.210,0:01:36.439
Um, so, when you have posterior blepharitis
or meibomian gland disease, basically what

0:01:36.439,0:01:42.429
that does is it breaks down that inner most
layer of your tears, so, it breaks down that

0:01:42.429,0:01:49.179
lipid layer and that such an important layer
because what it does is it keeps your eyes

0:01:49.179,0:01:51.340
really coated with moisture.

0:01:51.340,0:01:57.439
It allows that watery, you know, your watery
tears to kinda stick to your eyes instead

0:01:57.439,0:01:59.240
of running off your eyes.

0:01:59.240,0:02:04.389
Um, you know some people have trouble without,
you know, with having not enough tears and

0:02:04.389,0:02:06.039
it can affect that as well.

0:02:06.039,0:02:10.380
So, definitely, you know blepharitis and dry
eye are related.

0:02:10.380,0:02:15.620
If you don’t start by controlling your anterior
blepharitis it’s going to really cause problems

0:02:15.620,0:02:17.439
with dry eyes in the future.

0:02:17.439,0:02:21.790
So, we absolutely recommend you know, cleaning
your eyelids really well.

0:02:21.790,0:02:24.580
Um, our new spray is really great for that.

0:02:24.580,0:02:30.310
Um, it really fights that bacteria, keeps
all that blepharitis away and keeps those

0:02:30.310,0:02:31.500
dry eyes from happening.

0:02:31.500,0:02:34.989
So, I hope that helps if you have any questions
just let us know.

0:02:34.989,0:02:35.319
Thanks!
